Thousands of Austinites Without Power After Fire at Austin Energy Grid

On Thursday, July 28, 2023, a fire broke out at an Austin Energy substation, leaving thousands of Austinites without power. The fire started at around 1:30 p.m. at the substation located at 6901 E. Ben White Boulevard.

The Austin Fire Department responded to the scene and was able to quickly extinguish the fire. However, the fire caused extensive damage to the substation, and power was knocked out to approximately 12,000 customers in the surrounding area.

Austin Energy crews are working to repair the substation and restore power to the affected customers. However, it is unclear when power will be fully restored.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. However, Austin Energy officials said that it appears to have been caused by an electrical fault.

  • Manor

What Should Customers Do?

Austin Energy is urging customers who are without power to take the following steps:

  • Check to see if your neighbors have power. If they do, the outage may be limited to your home.
  • Turn off or unplug appliances and electronics to prevent damage when power is restored.
  • Keep your refrigerator and freezer closed as much as possible to prevent food from spoiling.
  • If you have a generator, follow the manufacturer's instructions for safe operation.
